Karviná Sea Nature and Relaxation Park
This activity was carried out in Phase 1 of the project
Partners involved in the activity: Statutory City of Karviná
The aim of the activity is to support the reintegration of the post-mining areas of Karviná back into the landscape. The post-mining areas have great potential to become a pleasant recreational base for the inhabitants of the surrounding towns. Therefore, it is very important to carefully define their future function, including with a view to preserving their existing biodiversity. A significant part of the activity deals with the development of the area near the Karviná Sea.
This activity was originally to include the planning documentation for the cycle path On the Trail of the Original Karviná, approximately 30 km in length, as well as the planning documentation for the 31 ha Karviná Sea Nature and Relaxation Park, including a video tour.
In the interim between the approval of the LIFE COALA project itself and the start of its activities, the Union of Towns and Municipalities of Karviná District (SMOOK) took up the idea of implementing the cycle path, and drew up an application for grants for the construction of the cycle path from the Integrated Regional Operational Programme under the title Main Cycle Paths of the Post-mining Landscape 2030. Their application was approved and the cycle path will be created using this grant, and will be completed in 2027. Work on this part of the activity has therefore been terminated and no further work is being carried out.
Thus, the activity continued only in the Karviná Sea development area and work on it started in 2022. The City of Karviná paid for the landscaping of the beaches, the paving of the footpath and cycle path, the floating piers and also regular maintenance and cleaning. Subsequently, in 2024, the city purchased the land around the Karviná Sea from a private owner and nothing stands in the way of further development.
Due to the mine shafts under the area, it is not yet possible to place permanent structures in the vicinity of the body of water. This was also the reason why the Karviná Sea Site Use Study was prepared instead of the originally intended project documentation. On the basis of this study, a building for the caretakers with a boat hire centre and refreshments will be built by the Karviná Sea in 2025 using complementary funding. New sports and nature trails with relaxation areas will be opened there by the end of 2027.
