Climate Resistant Region

About the Project

The main task of the integrated project LIFE COALA is to successfully implement the objectives of the “Adaptation Strategy of the Moravian-Silesian Region to the Impacts of Climate Change”.

The Moravian-Silesian Region is currently the only region in the Czech Republic that has developed an adaptation strategy and that addresses the issue of climate change in such a comprehensive manner. The process of implementing adaptation measures to climate change is quite challenging and faces a number of barriers.

Climate change is still seen as a rather marginal issue at the regional level. There is a lack of mutual transfer of information and experience, while practical examples of already implemented adaptation measures (so-called good practice) are little known or not presented at all. And it is to these factors that the LIFE COALA project, co-funded by the EU through the LIFE programme, is responding.

One of the two foreign partners of the project is the Silesian Voivodeship of Poland, which is also entering the process of regional adaptation and will be able to directly share the experience gained with other regions in Poland.

Project objectives LIFE COALA

  • create a coalition for adaptation and define a common priority for strengthening the climate resilience of the Moravian-Silesian Region
  • strengthen planning tools in the adaptation process with an emphasis on their subsequent application in practice
  • ensure sufficient professional and staff capacity to manage the process
  • support individual projects from complementary sources to strengthen the climate resilience of the region
  • improve and provide access to important information about the territory, which will be concentrated in an information system that will be used for the preparation of specific targeted measures and the continuous evaluation of the entire adaptation process
  • implement demonstration and pilot activities as examples of good practice, which will be used further by other players in the adaptation process in the Moravian-Silesian Region and also in other regions of the Czech Republic or abroad
  • raise public awareness in the Moravian-Silesian Region about climate change and the need to strengthen resilience through education and information
  • mobilise financial resources, increasing their use for the implementation of projects to raise the climate resilience of the region
  • disseminate the project results within the Moravian-Silesian Region and other regions in the Czech Republic, to establish new partnerships and draw on available good practice in EU countries

The LIFE COALA project is co-funded by the European Union through the LIFE Programme
