Revitalization of the Sušánecké Ponds (Sušánecké rybníky) in Havířov
Work on the activity started in Phase 1 and will be completed in Phase 3 of the project
Partners involved in the activity: Statutory City of Havířov, University of Mining and Metallurgy - Technical University of Ostrava and Moravian-Silesian Investment and Development
The aim of the activity is to revitalise the Sušánečky Ponds (51 ha) and return them to their natural function, to protect valuable nature by preserving and supporting the habitat of the dice snake (Natrix tessellata), which is found there, and to create an attractive recreational zone as a place of learning and leisure for the general public.
Sušánecké Ponds is the name for a complex of seven ponds along the Sušánek watercourse, which were used for fish breeding and as a summer recreation spot for the town's inhabitants until the end of the 1950s. They then served as sedimentation tanks for coal sludge and as a wastewater treatment plant until 2015.
The revitalisation is being professionally carried out by the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Ostrava, which will use the outputs of the preparatory activity entitled New Procedures for the Reclamation of Areas after Black Coal Mining. This innovative approach will restore the ecological balance of the area while preserving valuable natural features in the area.
This activity will include:
- a revitalisation feasibility study,
- passporting of the existing state of the site,
- a biological survey of the current distribution of the dice snake,
- revitalisation project documentation.
